Potion explosion by Cool Mini Or Not (My favourite board game publisher) manages to engage players in a great game, whilst providing a truly unique and original style.
In simple terms, this game is Candy Crush in a box. Each turn, a player will remove a marble from the dispenser and add it to their hand. Any marbles of the same colour that collide as a result of the removal, are also removed and collected, and thus the potential for a greater chain reaction is present.
The collected marbles can be added to potions and completing them will earn victory points. Complete potions can then be drunk, allowing special abilities such as collecting extra marbles and stealing from other players.
So, what do I think? Each and every game is different, and your available moves are always changing with the actions of other players. This allows for some good strategy, whilst levelling the playing field. The fast paced nature of the game ensures a victorious potions master in under an hour, so it’s a rather quick stint, yet engaging all the way. Games are normally quite close, and a comeback never seems of reach.
